2013 Diner Report

News from Holy Ghost Community Diner

January 2013 marked the beginning of six years as co-managers of Holy Ghost Community Diner by James C. and Elinor Nacoste-Eaglin.

During the year of 2012, the number of meals served was 13,252. These meals were served to men, women and children of all ages.

Holy Ghost Community Diner continues to provide a vital service to the needy of Opelousas and surrounding communities. This service could not be provided if it were not for the wonderful volunteers and donors who give of their time, talents and finances to support the Diner. On any given day there are eight or more volunteers working to insure the day’s operation goes smoothly. In addition to the volunteers from Holy Ghost Catholic Church many come from Queen of Angles, St. Jules of Leonville, St. Mary of Port Barre and other denominations throughout the Opelousas area. Those volunteers who work each of the three days meals are served average 60 hours a month of volunteer work. We are appreciative of the services rendered by all of the volunteers.

Groceries for the Diner are primarily provided through a stipend provided by Holy Ghost Parishioners, Second Harvest of New Orleans and Acadiana, Piggly Wiggly, Eunice Food Bank and Icons. Other donors are Mrs. Lucille Thomas (Thomas Catering), Mrs. Elise Durousseau (Yam Country Pies), Claver Lodge, Mrs. Sophie Pickens and Rollins Buckeneers R.V. Club.

Special thanks to Mr. Michael Carron and Mr. Alfred Dupre, Sr. for picking up groceries from Second Harvest and Eunice Superette.

Keep in mind Holy Ghost Community Diner is our project as parishioners of this church parish. We are all a part of it, since it is a mirror of what we do to support the needy of our community. Months from now when we, James and Elinor and all who volunteer look back upon the hours and days spent at the Diner, it will be with fond memories; the hard work, the gratitude and  appreciation expressed by the patrons fed as they came back to the door to say, “Thank you, God bless all of you.”
